What has God called us to do? What has God called us to be?
From school year to school year, students move. New students arrive. There is always some kind of change. Kind of expected in a school. Staff people leave. Staff people come. We expect this. Well, I am waiting for the ARRIVINGs now. So many have left. And Edgar is next in line.
I started 2017 with 6 students. 2 left in April. 1 left postHurricanes in November. 1 left postHurricanes in December. Another is about to leave… next week? or in 2 weeks. Wow. I will down to ONE teenager in my classroom.
What is God calling me to DO now? —-oh yeah, be still, be faithful, trust Him. (These are pictures of me doing just that, I hope!)
Faithful is He who calls you… 1 Thess 5:24
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3
I don’t want to be voted off this season of “CSCD-post Hurricanes”.
I am trusting God for His plans. And right now, I am praying for MORE – more of Him (less of me). More vision for this ministry. More workers to carry out His vision. More of His saving fullness see, more of His love, Who died for me… More more about Jesus
I recall one summer night in 1995 when I was praying and painting and sweating in the dorm when I thought God was saying “First this will happen and then THIS will come to pass and THEN after that… and finally…” Well, can I tell you, I have lived enough since 1995 to be able to tell you that I saw this happen and then I saw THIS come to pass and THEN after that… is where I am now. God has been faithful to me through all this time and I have seen His Work in the lives of students and now, I am seeing Him open new doors to the next then that comes THEN after that…
It’s an amazing journey – this life in Christ. (One day around 1995, a young teen told me that I should “get a life Betsy!” My response was and still is, “I have THE LIFE, Jesus Christ, living in me. What other LIFE should I be getting?”)
So I will faithfully do all that is asked of me by my Lord and Saviour. This semester that means… teaching ONE teenager: her mom is worried I too will leave. My response: God has provided so abundantly, He will provide for your daughter. God has given us safety and light when so many have neither, He will provide for our school. God has a plan for our future – He has provided the roofs and the lights and the mowers and workers to paint and help. He’s got this!
And this ONE teenager – so talented and often put aside in recent years as I worked with the more immature and more needy students. We are looking forward to some time for music study (she plays the guitar and sings! on key! and wants to learn piano, so yes, we will) and some trips for career studies ( she wants to be a vet tech or veterinarian or dog trainer or chef so let’s explore options!) and some time for more math study (she loves math and is doing geometry and algebra and maybe she would like to learn accounting and consumer math? maybe we can balance the check book together?) Is ONE too small of a number? Listen to how Jesus cared for the Deaf He encountered: https://voice.dts.edu/chapel/meeting-unseen-need/
Think of Helen Keller. Would we have denied her the opportunity to learn to speak, know, understand, communicate?
At this time, God has called me to be faithful to this one girl. And He opens doors to homes of isolated Deaf up in the mountains and to churches with Deaf ministries who need a literal hand in their ministries.
So I shall be faithful in the work before me. Our lunch cook has moved on to another job. So I will prepare lunch for this one student and myself and our Deaf maintenance men and our resident who is still working on finding a house to live in since their home was taken away by Hurricane Maria and any drop-ins we have. Yesterday I was surprised by 5 extras but the spaghetti stretched to serve us all! Because God is just that faithful in my life!
Therefore, I will be just that faithful in serving Him.
Thanks for stopping by and considering these things today. Thanks for your prayers and support in practical ways, in letters, in e-mails, and in encouraging messages. You are part of God demonstrating faithfulness to me.
Have a lovely day wherever you are!
